A look at Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood

CAIRO (AP) - Egypt's first freely elected president, Mohammed Morsi, appeared in court Monday on charges of inciting murder during December clashes at the presidential palace in Cairo. The trial is part of a wide-scale crackdown on his Muslim Brotherhood by the military-backed government after the nation's top general removed Morsi on July 3 following nationwide protests.Here is a look at some of key history of the Muslim Brotherhood group:- The Muslim Brotherhood group was founded in 1928 by a school teacher-turned-Islamic ideologue Hassan al-Banna in the Suez Canal city of Ismailia. He advocated spreading Islam by from raising up a "Muslim individual, then a Muslim family, then a Muslim society" based on Islamic teachings to pave the way for the establishment of a worldwide Islamic state that knows no borders.- Its motto is "Islam is the solution" and its emblem has two crossed swords above a Quran on a green field.- The Brotherhood has a strong hierarchical structure, starting with the top leader - called the "general guide," whom members vow to "hear and obey"- down through regional administrators to the base of small "families" made up of small numbers of members. The General Guidance Bureau serves as its main executive body, and a body known as the Shura Council serves as a form of general assembly.- It also runs a large network of charities, hospitals and social services that help build its grass-roots support. Businesses owned by Brotherhood members help finance the movement.- While based in Egypt, the Brotherhood has branches in dozens of countries, including the Palestinian militant group Hamas, now ruling the Gaza Strip. Its Tunisian arm dominated elections there after the 2011 ouster of autocrat Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.- The Brotherhood in its early years had an armed wing, the "Special Organization," to fight British colonialists and Israelis. It was implicated in assassination of Egyptian Prime Minister Mahmoud Fahmi al-Nokrashi in 1948 after he outlawed the group. Two months later, al-Banna was assassinated in Cairo.- After Egypt's 1952 military coup, the Brotherhood was accused of an assassination attempt against President Gamal Abdel-Nasser. Authorities responded by executing prominent Brotherhood ideologue Sayyed Qutb and imprisoning thousands of other members in what the group calls its "first agony."- After nearly a decade in prison and exile, the group witnessed a revival in the 1970s under then-President Anwar Sadat, who tolerated the Brotherhood and used it as a counterweight to leftist opponents. The group formally foreswore violence. Youth groups became a pool for new cadres. After the 1979 peace accords with Israel, Sadat was assassinated by Islamic militants, many influenced by Qutb's hard-line teachings.- Under the nearly 30-year rule of autocrat Hosni Mubarak, the Brotherhood saw various phases of toleration and repression. It struck deals to enjoy a margin of freedom that allowed it to create its networks. But when authorities felt it had gone too far, they would launch crackdowns, arresting members and trying leaders before military courts. Though still outlawed, the Brotherhood became the country's strongest opposition political group, running candidates in elections as independents, and winning a fifth of parliament's seats in 2005.- After Mubarak's ouster in 2011, the Brotherhood formed a political party for the first time, the Freedom and Justice Party. It emerged the biggest winner in parliament election, using its grass-root network to bring out voters. It took almost half the lower house's seats, while other Islamists took another quarter of the seats, and together they held nearly all the seats in the upper house. After Morsi's election victory with just under 52 percent of the vote, Brotherhood members dominated his government and other posts. Critics accused the Brotherhood's leadership of being the true decision-makers for Morsi, a claim his administration denied.

Να βγει κανείς ή να μη βγει από το Μνημόνιο;

Η λέξη «Ελλάδα» έχει καταστεί διεθνώς συνώνυμη της πιστοληπτικής αναξιοπιστίας. Θα χρειαστεί επίμονη δουλειά για πολλά χρόνια για να πειστούν οι αγορές ότι μάθαμε το μάθημά μας. Κάθε δείγμα χαλάρωσης και επιστροφής στις παλιές κακές συνήθειες θα εξετάζεται εξονυχιστικά από τους επενδυτές, για να κρίνουν αν αποτελεί ένδειξη ενός ευρύτερου πισωγυρίσματος. Η χώρα μας, πέραν του αναντίρρητου δημοσιονομικού άθλου, επιδεικνύει τελευταίως σημαντικά δείγματα προόδου σε μία σειρά ζωτικών τομέων: στη φορολογική διοίκηση, στον έλεγχο των δαπανών Υγείας, στην άρση εμποδίων στην επιχειρηματική δράση. Συχνά, τα θετικά βήματα έχουν γίνει με την ισχυρή πίεση των δανειστών μας. Θα συνεχίσει η κυβερνητική πολιτική να κινείται στην ίδια κατεύθυνση, παρά τις πιέσεις βουλευτών, συνδικαλιστών, επιχειρηματικών συμφερόντων, κάθε λογής συντεχνιών, μετά το «τέλος του Μνημονίου»;

Angry at Prague, Artist Ensures He's Understood

By DAN BILEFSKY, The New York Times

October 21, 2013
“The finger,” said the Czech sculptor David Cerny, “speaks for itself.” On that point, at least, everyone could agree.
Mr. Cerny is not known for understatement or diplomacy, from depicting Germany as a network of motorways resembling a swastika to displaying a caricature of a former Czech president inside an enormous fiberglass rear end.
But on Monday, Mr. Cerny, 45, took his political satire to new heights — or depths, depending on your perspective — when, on the eve of Czech general elections this weekend, he installed on the Vltava River a 30-foot-high, plastic, purple hand with a raised middle finger. It is a symbol, he said, that points directly at the Prague Castle, the seat of the current Czech president, Milos Zeman.
Mr. Cerny said the monumental hand with its 16-foot-long outstretched middle finger, placed on a float facing the castle, was a “scream of alarm” against the state of politics in the Czech Republic, endemic corruption and Mr. Zeman, a former leftist prime minister, whom he accused of becoming intoxicated with power. He said the sculpture, which he gave an unprintable title, was also aimed at the country’s Communist Party, which could gain a share of power in the coming elections for the first time since the revolution that overthrew communism more than two decades ago.
“This finger is aimed straight at the castle politics,” Mr. Cerny said by phone from Prague, the Czech capital. “After 23 years, I am horrified at the prospect of the Communists returning to power and of Mr. Zeman helping them to do so.”
Mr. Zeman, who was visiting Ukraine on Monday, declined to comment through a spokeswoman, who told the Czech news media that he had not yet seen the sculpture.
The sculpture is part of a Czech tradition of cultural rebellion dating to communist times, when artists, writers and musicians like the Plastic People of the Universe used subversive lyrics or gestures to revolt against authority. But while challenging the government could land you in a prison cell during the communist era, Mr. Cerny’s floating installation was authorized by the local nautical authority. Even so, he came under criticism, with some accusing him of turning the country and its famously pristine capital into an international laughingstock.
“First we are made to look like thieves before the world,” said a reader in the discussion forum on the online version of Hospodarske Noviny, a leading newspaper. “And now we look like idiots at the center of Europe. It is not funny at all.”
But analysts said the subversive hand gesture accurately reflected the intensifying frustration of many Czechs and a growing feeling that the 1989 revolution has failed to deliver on its promises.
In August, the Czech Parliament voted to dissolve itself, setting off early elections after an anticorruption investigationuncovered safes stuffed with millions of dollars in cash and stashes of gold that prosecutors suspect may have been used in an elaborate influence-peddling scheme. A former prime minister, Petr Necas, was forced to resign amid accusations that his chief of staff, Jana Nagyova, who was also his girlfriend at the time, had used the country’s security services to spy on the prime minister’s wife, whom Mr. Zeman subsequently divorced. Mr. Necas and Ms. Nagyova have since married in a secret ceremony. Mr. Cerny first came to prominence in May 1991 when, at the age of 23, he was arrested after painting a giant Soviet tank pink, turning a work meant to commemorate the liberation of Czechoslovakia by the Red Army in 1945 into something that looked like a giant child’s toy.Mr. Cerny said Monday that he feared the finger risked being defaced or even removed by vandals. He said he had been barraged by criticism on Facebook by communist and Zeman supporters calling him “a capitalist pig.”
